The Hummer H1 Build Project - Page 6

STEP 6
LETS DO SOME BODYWORK

We shipped the truck out to our favorite body shop for the rough work. At the same time we welded up alot of the open seams and uneven metalwork left by the guys at Active Power. Of course our body man is ready to strangle Active Power for some of the work done to the truck. Work is progressing, and we are actively finding hardware components for the truck like trick door handles, weatherstripping that was not included for the rear doors, hood latches, etc.

We found a local vendor for the glass. We used laminated safety glass for all the windows including the roll up side windows. We have begun permanently installing the windows using the supplied weatherstrip. We had the body shop edge in the paint around all the window openings so we can do this more easily.
We found late model inside and outside door handles for the truck at our local junk yard. The stock paddle handles were not used and more streamline hardware was a better fit for our taste. We are using Toyota Corolla hardware including window cranks, regulators, door handles, etc.

We opted for hand crank windows to simplify the installation process. We figured that wiring all 4 windows for power units would add to the complexity of the wiring nightmare. Plus we intend to use the truck without doors most of the time anyhow!
The window hardware was mocked up on a sheet of aluminum and then the template was applied to the doors. We fabricated the hardware to mount the crank assembly to the new glass. We then disassembled the doors and send them off to the body shop. Once the doors bodywork and paint is edged in, then we will permanently install the windows and hardware plus the door latches.

Here is the steel subframe for the hood. It helps with support for the hood. We found latches and extensions pistons that will work, along with about 50 ft of 1 inch box tubing. The hood will pivot from the front and use suv rear tailgate pistons to help raise the 6ft wide 150lb+ hood. The supports include backing plates for the side latches.
