The Hummer H1 Build Project - Page 4

STEP 4
TRIAL BODY ASSEMBLY ON FRAME

We mounted the front bumper and then made metal supports for the fiberglas hood. Steel hinges were welded to the hood support. The location of the body was determined by the located of the hood, and the location of the rear of the body to the rear bumper.

Because the body was made for the older body style truck, the front floor was made with a little too much engine compartment. The use of a plasma cutter was needed to remove the engine hump. Based on the location of the body to the frame for us, we can make the firewall and front floor almost totally flat.

The stock suspension was trimmed using the plasma cutter to better fit the body. Then the new body mounts were bolted and welded into place. We chose to make supports for inside the stock framerails so that the 1/2" grade 8 bolts were supported.

The rear suspension was trimmed and the rear bumper was notched to allow it to move forward on the truck. Now the rear bumper and body are within and inch.

We have started testing rims and tires for the truck. Based on our research, it appears that 37 or 38 inch pires will be used with 16" aluminum rims. This will give the truck a high stance and will fill the wheel wells.

We spend a weekend cleaning and prepping the engine, transmission, wiring and components. The donor truck had a fire in the passenger compartment, but the engine was unharmed with the exception of a couple plastic parts.

Now that the body is positioned on the chassis, it was time to 'fix' the floor where it had to be cut to accomodate the stock frame running through. Chris from Active Power was great about helping out with additional metal to make the job go easier. He also provided the correct rear crossmember. Once the floor section was removed, new front floor was installed along with a smaller hump for the transmission.
